A year after Google broke ground on a $2 billion plan for a pair of data center campuses in the Lowcountry, the tech giant has announced another multi-billion-dollar investment in South Carolina.
According to a news release, Google’s two-year $9 billion investment will expand the company’s cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure in the state. The funding also will support the local workforce in Dorchester County.
“Just last year, Google made its historic investment in Dorchester County, bringing valuable economic opportunities to our community,” David Chinnis, Dorchester County Council chairman, said in the release. “We appreciate the continued partnership with Google and this investment further strengthens our region’s workforce by creating quality jobs and expanding pathways for local talent, while reinforcing the county’s position as a hub for long-term economic growth.”
The new plans follow a 2024 announcement for Google to develop two new data centers in Dorchester County intended to increase local tax revenue for the growing community and funding county schools, according to the release.
Although the new announcement did not address new job creation, the company’s plans last year were to lead to another 200 new jobs.
“We are thrilled to see Google deepen its roots in Dorchester County,” John Truluck, Dorchester County’s director of economic development, said in the release. “This additional investment not only reflects the strength of our local partnership but also reinforces our shared vision of sustainable, long-term growth that benefits our residents, businesses and schools.”
