The Holmes Tract on John’s Island has received permanent protection from Lowcountry Land Trust, a nonprofit conserving Lowcountry landscapes and waterways.
The six-acre property is both land and wetland which flows into Bohicket Creek, according to a news release. The property will be a part of a 96-acre corridor along Plow Ground Road, which is protected by three separate landowners.
“This is a great example of how individual landowners can make a lasting difference,” Kate Parks Schaefer, chief conservation officer for Lowcountry Land Trust, said in the release. “We are deeply thankful to Mr. Holmes for his desire to preserve and protect his family’s land for future generations and his dedication to strengthening the connections between wetlands and protected lands that benefit both the environment and the surrounding community.”
The conserved land contributes to Charleston Country’s Urban Growth Boundary outlined in the Comprehensive Plan. The release said the Holmes family fully donated the property, and the Donnelley Foundation helped cover the project’s diligence costs.
