After announcing plans in 2021, the Medical University of South Carolina broke ground on the $130 million MUSC Health Nexton Medical Center.
According to a news release, a large percentage of MUSC’s inpatients are coming from Berkeley County. The 70-bed hospital can help create a greater reach for medical attention, especially for the 12,000 Nexton master-planned community residents.
“The groundbreaking for this new hospital and medical facility represents MUSC’s commitment to this community,” Dr. David Cole, president of MUSC, said in the release. “We are proud to be a trusted partner to deliver the highest quality innovative health care for the greater TriCounty region.”
The medical center hospital will offer general medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, women’s health and cardiology services, as well as a pharmacy, according to the release.
With the hospital, the campus will have a 30,000-square-foot outpatient cancer facility associated with MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, the National Cancer Institute-designated center in downtown Charleston, the release said. Services for the cancer facility include radiation therapy, oncology and an infusion site.
“This new hospital will provide access to the best comprehensive care possible, enabling patients to receive life-saving treatment close to home,” Dr. Patrick Cawley, CEO of MUSC Health and executive vice president for MUSC Health Affairs, said in the release.
The cancer facility is expected to be completed in summer 2027, and the hospital in spring 2028, according to the release.
