Unemployment claims drop by nearly 5,000 in week
The 14,436 initial claims filed for the week ending July 18 was the lowest total since the pre-pandemic week of March 14, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce. More than 1,100 claims were filed in Richland County.
S.C. offering 6 additional weeks of unemployment benefits
The extended benefits will be added to a previously announced 10-week state program for individuals whose regular unemployment insurance benefits year ended on or after June 14.
S.C. unemployment drops to 8.7% in June
May’s revised estimate stood at 12.4%. The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce’s monthly survey of households estimated that the number of South Carolinians working in June increased to 2,222,144.
S.C. unemployment claims increase by 3,267 in week
The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce said jump is more attributable to the Fourth of July holiday than the pandemic. In the last 17 weeks, 671,079 initial claims have been filed in the state.

In the last 16 weeks, 651,750 initial unemployment claims have been filed in South Carolina. The federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program, which provides an additional $600 per week, is set to expire July 25.
