South Carolina chefs, restaurants named James Beard finalists

The James Beard Foundation has narrowed the field for the 2026 Restaurant and Chef Awards and three of the eventual recipients could come from South Carolina.

Out of eight original semifinalists, three local favorites have advanced.

Best New RestaurantMerci, Charleston

Chef Michael and Courtney Zentner’s European-inspired bistro in Harleston Village has gained rapid acclaim for its daily menu and focus on seasonal Lowcountry sourcing.

Outstanding Bakery Welton’s Tiny Bakeshop, Charleston

This business on Upper King Street is one of only five bakeries nationwide to be named a finalist, recognized for its artisanal breads and pastries.

Best Chef: Southeast — Joe Cash, Scoundrel, Greenville

After earning a Michelin star last year, Chef Joe Cash’s French-inspired bistro in downtown Greenville continues its momentum. Cash is one of five finalists representing the six-state Southeast region.

The winners will be announced at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on June 15.
