Felix R Alvarado began his career in 1987 as an instrumentation and controls engineer at an oil-fired power plant for the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, where he supervised 14 instrumentation technicians. Two years later, he joined Fluor at the company’s Puerto Rico regional office with a goal to become a leader and successful project manager for Fluor’s U.S. mainland offices.

Over 38 years with Fluor, Alvarado has built an extensive career as a project and engineering manager, leading initiatives across the United States, Canada, Spain, Denmark and Chile. His experience spans pharmaceuticals, power and water utilities, advanced manufacturing, mining, metals and oil and gas sectors.

Alvarado earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayaguez Campus. His father’s advice shaped his leadership approach: “You never give up,” he said. This principle of resilience has guided his ability to navigate complex challenges.

Fluor leadership entrusted Alvarado with his current role as General Manager of the Greenville office, one of the company’s most important locations.

Amy Chico earned her Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from West Virginia University in 1995, where she was active in Chi Omega and the Student Society of Landscape Architecture. She joined HLA in May 1997 and has spent more than 28 years with the Charleston-based firm, advancing to vice president of landscape architecture and business development.

Chico has demonstrated sustained commitment to community service through leadership roles across multiple organizations. She served on the board of directors for Charleston Habitat for Humanity from July 2019 through July 2025 and continues her involvement through active service on the organization’s Land Committee and Family Selection Committee. She is a steering committee member of THRIVE: A Professional Women’s Group and joined the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce board in January 2025, furthering her dedication to economic empowerment and community development initiatives throughout the region.

Bob Fei leads Life Cycle Engineering Inc., a Charleston-based engineering firm with 520 employees worldwide. Fei earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in industrial and systems engineering from University of Southern California.

He began his career as an IT consultant with EY, where he developed expertise in building relationships and enabling organizational change. Fei now serves as president and CEO of Life Cycle Engineering, which became 100% employee-owned through an ESOP in November 2024.

A licensed professional engineer in South Carolina and other states, Fei serves on the Trident United Way board and previously chaired the organization. He embraces guiding principles established by Life Cycle Engineering’s founders: “Leave our customers better off than we found them” and “do the right thing the right way,” Fei said.

He defines success as helping individuals and organizations achieve their full potential with priorities of God, family, country and job. Outside work, the self-described introvert enjoys wakeboarding in Charleston’s waterways and attending track days in his MX-5.

Erick Fry leads Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic, which employs more than 4,200 people and generates approximately $4 billion in annual revenue. According to a recent University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business study, NIWC Atlantic has a $10 billion total economic impact on the United States and a $2.1 billion economic impact in South Carolina, supporting 41,419 jobs and nearly $3.8 billion in labor income nationwide.

Fry earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and a Master of Science in engineering management with a minor in systems engineering from the University of Alabama, Huntsville.

He received the Special Act Award in 2024 for work shaping and in 2025 for critical action team leadership. Fry began his career as a baker’s assistant in his family business, where he learned conflict management and how to handle competing priorities.

“Always ask: How are you making others better?” Fry said, describing the best advice he has received.

Jonathan Goerling brings more than 10 years of design and construction engineering experience to his role as partner at Summerville-based Hensley & Goerling Consulting Engineers, which he co-founded in November 2015. Goerling is a South Carolina licensed mechanical contractor with more than six years of installation and project management expertise. As an MEP engineer, his specialties encompass mechanical, plumbing and fire protection design across diverse building systems including HVAC direct expansion, chilled water, boiler heating, steam piping, plumbing and fire sprinkler design.

Goerling maintains professional engineering registrations in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina and demonstrates proficiency with IMC, IPC, IFGC, NFPA, IBC, IEEC and ASHRAE codes and standards. His career progression includes mechanical engineering positions at RMF Engineering, BES Design/Build and Gross Plumbing, where he managed mechanical and plumbing construction projects spanning higher education, hospitals and industrial facilities. His technical expertise and multi-state licensure position him as a comprehensive resource in the mechanical engineering field.

Shawn Higbe serves as Vice President of McCall-Thomas Engineering Co., Inc., where he leads strategic initiatives for the 124-employee firm. Higbe holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University, where he served as President of Alpha Gamma Rho, the agricultural fraternity.

At McCall-Thomas, Higbe currently serves as Integrator for the company’s Entrepreneurial Operating System implementation, which began in December 2024 and rolled out company-wide in May 2025. This initiative unified the company’s divisions under a single operating structure, creating “One McT” through standardized processes and enhanced collaboration. The firm has expanded its services to include electrical construction and utility substation engineering while opening new offices in Moncks Corner and Lumberton, North Carolina.

Higbe has served on the NRECA TDEC System Operations and Controls Subcommittee since 2005 and received the Alumni of the Year honor from Alpha Gamma Rho at Clemson University. “True success isn’t just about reaching goals,” Higbe said. “It’s also about how you treat people along the way.”

He actively volunteers with his church youth programs, Harvest for Hope and supports the Samaritan House in Orangeburg.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in business from Wake Forest University, Joseph ‘Mac’ Hodgson secured a role at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey as an analyst. He moved up the ranks there over the course of a decade, ultimately working as the director of equity research, where he covered over 20 bank stocks across the country.

In 2013, he stepped into the role of vice president at The GEL Group, where he served for early four years. Hodgson was then promoted to president and has now worked as the company’s chief executive officer for the last four years. Since joining the company’s executive team, he’s been instrumental in finding unique, innovative ways to meet client objectives, fulfill the company’s mission, and strengthen its foundation for expansion and upward growth.

Outside of work, Hodgson enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters. He also gives back to the community by coaching youth soccer.

Gregory Hudson earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in business from Clemson University before completing a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. Upon graduation, Hudson joined RMF Engineering, where he has built his entire career, making it the only company he has ever worked for.

As Associate and Project Manager at the 350-employee engineering firm, Hudson navigates significant industry challenges, particularly managing projects where budgets were established pre-COVID while material and equipment costs have substantially increased. He and his team focus on creative design solutions, finding ways to substitute materials, modify designs and compress construction schedules to align projects with original budget estimates.

Hudson’s professional philosophy reflects advice that has shaped his approach: “Good things, worth doing, are often hard.” He believes in challenging oneself and learning to accept setbacks as essential components of success. His early experience leading young campers on a 50-mile canoe trip taught him valuable lessons about patience and working with less experienced individuals.

Chris Jordan has spent nearly three decades advancing South Carolina’s transportation infrastructure. Jordan joined the South Carolina Department of Transportation in 1992, progressing from supply specialist to program manager over 26 years. During his tenure, he managed road design projects and supervised roadway construction inspection in Anderson. Jordan transitioned to RK&K in 2018 as manager of the firm’s Columbia office, overseeing a multi-disciplined design staff. He was promoted to senior project delivery leader in 2022 and advanced to director in 2023.

Jordan earned his civil engineering credentials through both military and academic pathways. He served as a civil engineering technician with the U.S. Air Force Reserve’s 315th Civil Engineering Squadron at Charleston Air Force Base from 1991 to 1998. Jordan completed an associate degree in civil engineering from the Community College of the Air Force in 1991, followed by a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of South Carolina in 2009. He holds professional engineering licenses in both South Carolina and Tennessee and earned his Design-Build Institute of America certification in 2022.

Kevin Laird serves as executive vice president at Goodwyn Mills and Cawood, a 750-employee engineering firm, where he addresses the industry’s most pressing challenges: a shrinking labor pool and the impact of technology in design.

Laird holds dual bachelor’s degrees in environmental science and civil engineering from Clemson University, where he also played football, and earned his master’s degree in civil engineering from Auburn University. His engineering expertise is complemented by business acumen honed through board service with Clearwater Solutions.

“Hard work, creativity and a good attitude solve most problems,” Laird says, a philosophy shaped by his first job mowing lawns, where he learned to sell himself and take pride in his work.

His commitment to community includes past service on the United Way Investment Board and with the Boy Scouts of America. He completed Leadership South Carolina in 2013.

Beyond his professional achievements, Laird competed in water ski competitions as a youth, a fact that might surprise colleagues who know him from his Clemson football days.

Married to Kristy for 28 years, Laird is father to four children and defines success through a leadership lens focused on helping others achieve their goals.

Shannon Meder leads HNTB Corporation’s South Carolina operations as location leader and vice president for the 7,000-employee engineering firm, addressing the industry’s shrinking talent pool as artificial intelligence and data analytics programs draw students away from traditional engineering disciplines.

A University of South Carolina graduate with a bachelor’s degree in environmental and biological sciences, Meder identifies workforce availability, funding uncertainty and client demands for faster project delivery as interconnected challenges requiring strategic innovation.

“The best advice I received was to strive for excellence, while understanding that it differs from perfection,” she says, emphasizing timely, thoughtful solutions over idealized delays.

Her first job as a lifeguard beginning at age 15 taught responsibility, risk anticipation and composure under pressure — skills directly applicable to high-stakes engineering projects.

Meder serves on the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce board, the American Council of Engineering Companies South Carolina Chapter executive board as treasurer/secretary, and co-founded Women in Transportation Seminar’s South Carolina chapter.

Mother to four boys born within five years, Meder prioritizes empathy-driven leadership, fostering supportive environments alongside achieving results.

Guy Mossman graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering. He now leads ORBIS Inc., a 450-employee engineering firm that has evolved significantly over 25 years in business.

This year, Mossman spearheaded the acquisition of Canopy Design Lab, a Charleston-based research and engineering design firm specializing in product development, embedded systems and AI/ML applications. The acquisition brought Dr. Michael Wieckowski, one of Canopy’s founders, to ORBIS as chief technology officer.

Under Mossman’s leadership, ORBIS established a dedicated AI department working on initiatives including a partnership with Intel to bring artificial intelligence to naval shipbuilding and repair. The company also develops AI-enabled systems for radiographic weld inspections.

“Early in my career, I learned that customers often come to you with a specific request, but if you take the time to understand what they’re really trying to accomplish, you can often find a better solution,” Mossman said.

Mossman once survived a maritime emergency when his vessel struck a reef 80 nautical miles offshore, requiring Coast Guard helicopter rescue from a life raft.

Jeff Mulliken, PhD, PE, leads Carolina Transportation Engineers & Associates as a partner, guiding a firm that has expanded significantly across both North and South Carolina. Mulliken earned all three degrees in civil engineering from the University of South Carolina before beginning his career with the South Carolina Department of Transportation in bridge construction.

At Carolina TEA, Mulliken has overseen major projects including the firm’s participation in Private Bridge and Road recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. The company is completing a five-bridge project for SCDOT months ahead of schedule, with four bridges expected to open by mid-2026. Carolina TEA also received the 2025 City of Charlotte Crown of Excellence.

Mulliken serves as ACEC-SC Affiliate National Director and previously served as board president in 2023. He also sits on ACEC National committees for transportation and small firms. His recent honors include 2024 ACEC-SC Engineer of the Year and the 2023 ASCE-SC LeTellier Cup for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution.

“As engineers, we have a duty to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public,” Mulliken said, describing lessons learned early in his career.

Brian C. Melson oversees the design and engineering of electrical projects as Principal Manager of Electrical Engineering at Buford Goff & Associates. Melson’s project management responsibilities encompass managing all project phases from preliminary design through final acceptance for the firm’s electrical engineering staff.

His extensive portfolio spans diverse project types including hospital and medical facilities, correctional facilities, postal office buildings, retail centers, nursing homes, courthouses, museums, historic renovations and parking garages across South Carolina. These various projects demonstrate his expertise in lighting design, primary and secondary power distribution, emergency power systems, life safety systems and compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

Buford Goff & Associates is a consulting engineering firm established in 1969, specializing in mechanical, electrical, security and communications engineering divisions. The Columbia-based company leverages decades of experience with advanced technologies to ensure project success and improve operational efficiency for clients. The firm designs and integrates systems essential for safety, productivity and reliable communications, serving diverse clientele throughout South Carolina.

RL Simpson leads Isomer Project Group, an engineering, procurement and construction firm that has grown to 40 employees and earned recognition as an Inc. 5000 company, ranking third in engineering. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Clemson University.

Simpson addresses what he calls “the missing middle” — a shortage of experienced professionals with five to 25 years of experience in the EPC industry. Since founding Isomer, he has prioritized accelerating entry-level employee development while requiring senior staff to make mentorship their primary duty. The firm only hires entry-level talent with strong communication skills and willingness to learn broadly.

“Projects and businesses don’t build themselves — people do,” Simpson said. “When you invest in your people, listen to them, and give them ownership of outcomes, the work takes care of itself.”

Isomer has been named a Best Place to Work annually since becoming eligible. The company recently relocated to Hampton Station, where it has capacity to expand from 40 to 100 employees. Simpson previously worked for a weekly newspaper, designing advertisements and maintaining IT infrastructure.

Mike Weeks has led DWG Consulting Engineers as chief executive officer since April 1994, building the firm’s expertise in mechanical and fire protection engineering. As a registered mechanical engineer, registered fire protection engineer and certified commissioning authority, Weeks serves as principal responsible for all mechanical and fire protection engineering and commissioning at the Charleston-based company.

Before founding DWG, Weeks worked as a mechanical engineer at Georgia Southern University from April 1992 to April 1994, where he managed project design of HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems on the expanding campus. His experience spans multiple roles including contractor, facilities engineer, design engineer and commissioning agent.

Weeks specializes in coordinating MEP design with owners, architects and facility users while maintaining focus on budget, maintainability and energy efficiency. His project portfolio includes new construction, historic restoration and renovation of existing facilities. He earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Auburn University in 1987.

Barry Whalen earned a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from West Virginia University and began his career as a landscape architect in Florida, where he developed expertise in wetland permitting and environmental systems. As president of HLA, Inc., Whalen leads a 35-employee engineering firm while maintaining a strong focus on sustainable design and community development.

Whalen has served on the Charleston Regional Development Alliance Board of Directors from 2017 to 2024 and the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors from 2018 to 2024, where he chaired the Regional Policy Committee. He previously served on The Exchange Club of Metropolitan Charleston Board of Directors from 2000 to 2010. His affordable housing advocacy includes work with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, CTAR, Metanoia and E-3 Foundation.

“The biggest challenge facing our industry today is affordable housing,” Whalen said. He was recognized by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce with a Milestone Award in 2018 and named a South Carolina Ambassador for Economic Development in 2000.

Stuart Whiteside has led SeamonWhiteside as principal in charge while building a career rooted in civil engineering excellence. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1978 and master’s degree in civil engineering in 1979 from Clemson University, Whiteside entered the engineering industry where early experiences with weak leadership taught him to prioritize employees.

Under his leadership, SeamonWhiteside has grown to 220 employees and opened a Columbia office in October 2025. Whiteside is transitioning to a part-time advisory role in November 2025.

His civic involvement includes serving as chairman of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce in 2013 and board positions with Trident Technical College Foundation, Charleston Regional Development Authority and Clemson University Advancement Board for Real Estate Development. He served on the American Heart Association Lowcountry Heart Walk Executive Leadership Team from 2017 to 2025.

Clemson University’s Civil Engineering Department honored Whiteside with its 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award. “Don’t join an organization just to join,” he said. “Join to be involved and take a leadership role.”

Melvin Williams began his engineering career at a nuclear power plant under construction, where he learned the value of teamwork and safety. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology from South Carolina State University in 1985, graduating cum laude. Williams continued his education at The Citadel Military College, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2000 with cum laude honors and the Thomas C. Evans Jr. recognition.

As vice president at Terracon Consultants Inc., Williams leads within an organization of 8,000 employees worldwide. His commitment to community service extends across numerous boards, including the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center Advisory Board and Trident Technical College Foundation.

Williams was elected to the Society of American Military Engineers Fellows in 2020 and the American Council of Engineering Companies College of Fellows in 2021. When reflecting on leadership opportunities, Williams recalled a mentor’s question that shaped his approach: “If not now, then when? If not you, then who?”
