Metromont
Title
CEO

Rick Pennell leads Metromont, a company founded a century ago by his grandfather, Captain J. Roy Pennell, a civil engineer and World War I veteran who built roads along the Eastern seaboard. In the early 1950s, Pennell’s father, Dick Pennell, convinced the captain to construct one of the world’s first prestressed concrete plants in the United States in Greenville, moving the company beyond traditional building materials into advanced concrete manufacturing.

Pennell returned Metromont to private ownership in 2003, catalyzing more than 20 years of development and growth. The company operates on three core values: faith, honor and passion. Metromont has implemented automation to reduce workload and improve productivity while maintaining its family culture.

“Rick has taught the organization to embrace uncertainty and rely on instinct and experience for decision-making, recognizing that not everything can be quantified—sometimes you must act and adapt as you proceed,” according to the document.

Pennell’s entrepreneurial spirit drives the company to accept challenging projects others decline, transforming setbacks into competitive advantages through continuous learning.
