Amazon to build delivery facility in Calhoun County

Amazon.com Inc. has selected the Calhoun County I-26 Industrial Park as the site for a new 150,000-square-foot last-mile delivery facility. Amazon purchased the land directly from the county following Colhoun County County Council approval.

The company broke ground in July and plans to have the facility operational in late 2027, according to a news release from the county.

Amazon’s last-mile delivery stations power the final step of the delivery process, enabling faster delivery for customers across the Midlands region, the release stated. The project is anticipated to bring more than 100 full- and part-time jobs to the region. The county said Amazon will share more details as plans are finalized.

The Calhoun County I-26 Industrial Park is a 256-acre, county-owned park located at Sonntag Drive and Sires Lane in Gaston. Amazon joins the Starbucks roasting plant and The Fitts Co. as tenants in the park.

We look forward to the partnership and to the benefits to the community through good paying jobs, assets to the tax base, and engaging community involvement.”

John McLauchlin Jr., Calhoun County economic development director, said in the release: “We want to thank Amazon for selecting the Calhoun County I-26 Industrial Park for its last-mile delivery station. To have a company of this caliber recognize the value of locating here is a testament to our assets, including our road and utility infrastructure and our proximity to a talented workforce. I also want to thank County Council and staff for doing what it took to put us in a position to succeed.”

Sam Blatt, senior manager for economic development at Amazon, said the park’s location between Columbia and the Port of Charleston made it a good strategic location.

“Calhoun County’s leadership and collaboration made this project possible, and we’re excited about what it means for the community,” Blatt said in the release. “Good jobs, fast delivery for customers, and a long-term investment in the Midlands. We’re proud to work with the county on this facility.”
