$8M in CDBG grants awarded to 8 South Carolina communities

Eight communities from throughout South Carolina are receiving community development grant funds totaling almost $8 million for public improvement projects.

This funding comes from the South Carolina Community Development Block Grant program, which biannually awards grants to aid municipal governments to improve economic opportunities and meet community revitalization needs, according to a news release.

The South Carolina Department of Commerce awards the CDBG funds, which will directly benefit 3,364 residents and total $7,976,227, the release said.

Communities receiving spring 2025 CDBG funding include:

• City of Bishopville, Shaw Street Pump Station Upgrade – $1 million
• Town of Carlisle, Cox Creek/Westwood Sewer Upgrade – $1 million
• Colleton County, New Well/Well Upgrade – $2.15 million
• Dorchester County, Stratton Capers Water Upgrade – Phase 2 – $1 million
• Town of Lane, Sewer Connections – $365,177
• Laurens County, Joanna Water and Sewer Upgrades – $1,321,050
• Town of Port Royal, Casablanca Circle Sewer Extension – $720,000
• Williamsburg County, Water Extension – $420,000

“The community and economic development efforts through our CDBG program continue to positively affect residents throughout South Carolina,” said Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III. “These projects are vital for a community’s growth and quality of life, helping the state remain a top destination for business and people.”

Local governments receiving CDBG funds are required to provide at least a 10% match in funding to complete the projects, and all grants awarded through the program must meet at least one of three objectives:

• Benefit to low- to moderate-income persons
• Aid in the prevention or elimination of slum and blighted conditions
• Meet other urgent community needs where existing conditions pose a serious and immediate threat to public health and welfare and where other financial resources are not readily available to meet such needs

Grant funds are allocated on an annual basis to South Carolina from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the South Carolina Commerce Department administers the CDBG program on the state’s behalf.
