Global biotechnology company to expand West Ashley operations

Charles River Laboratories International, a global biotechnology research and development company, is expanding its operations in Charleston County, investing $13 million into a microbial solutions facility.
Charles River’s addition to its current site in West Ashley will include a new cleanroom and installation of automated equipment to produce cartridges for its portable testing system and its multi-cartridge system, according to the release.
“Investing in advanced manufacturing is more than just increasing efficiency, it reflects our company’s commitment to being at the forefront of technology in a rapidly evolving environment,” Niall Power, senior director of Charles River’s Charleston site, said in the release. “Automation allows us to produce our products with the greatest precision, consistency and safety. It also gives our teams the opportunity to focus on high-value work.”
The new equipment reduces the need by 95% for limulus amebocyte lysate or recombinant raw materials that accompany traditional testing methods, as well as reducing workload of employees, the release said.
“By investing in advanced manufacturing and automation, Charles River Laboratories solidifies its future, fortifies our local economy, and sets a powerful precedent for the innovative businesses flourishing throughout Charleston County,” Merle Johnson, Charleston County Economic Development executive director, said in the release. “The continued growth of the life sciences sector is a testament to the strong business environment and skilled workforce we have cultivated.”
Founded in 1947, the company has spent more than 30 years in the Lowcountry operating quality control testing solutions, according to a news release. Charles River’s main focus is the early stages of drug manufacturing and development.
Charles River introduced Endosafe Trillium in 2023 as an animal-free testing solution, as well as a recent cartridge recycling program with TerraCycle to create outdoor furniture, storage bins and park benches, according to the release.
Operations in the expansion are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.
“For over three decades, Charles River Laboratories has been a valued part of our business community, and we are thrilled they are continuing to invest in their future here,” Kylon Jerome Middleton, Charleston County Council chairman, said in the release.
