For more than a century, M. Dumas and Sons has remained Charleston’s premier menswear destination, blending tradition with modern retail innovation on historic King Street. The family-owned business, founded in 1917, has evolved from its military origins into a lifestyle brand that defines Lowcountry style.

CEO and Co-Owner Gary Flynn leads the 35-employee company, which has experienced strong  growth in recent years, reflecting the store’s expanding influence in Charleston’s retail landscape.

“M. Dumas and Sons was founded in 1917 by Mendel Dumas to serve the naval officers stationed in Charleston by providing military uniforms and durable outdoor apparel,” Flynn explained, noting the company’s service-oriented roots that continue today.

The business has weathered significant changes throughout its 108-year history. Key milestones include expanding into fashion denim during the 1960s, adding lifestyle brands like Tommy Bahama in the 1990s and completing a $2 million renovation in 2015. Most recently, the company opened two brand partner stores — Southern Tide and Johnnie-O — and launched a second M. Dumas and Sons location in Mt. Pleasant in 2023.

Flynn’s leadership philosophy centers on empowering employees to make customer-focused decisions without bureaucratic constraints. The company operates in what he acknowledges is a discretionary spending category, making customer experience paramount. Every aspect of the business, from store visuals and music to temperature and hospitality, is designed to inspire customers to desire what Dumas offers.

The company’s commitment to community engagement reflects its deep Charleston roots. Business partner David Dumas actively supports local causes, viewing community investment as essential to long-term success. This philosophy recognizes that the business thrives when Charleston thrives.

Flynn emphasizes continuous learning and adaptation as key competitive advantages. “We always seek ways to improve by trying new brands, offering new customer experiences and exploring new visuals,” he noted, reflecting a growth mindset that has sustained the business through multiple economic cycles.

Located at 294 King St., M. Dumas and Sons continues to serve as more than just a clothing store — it represents Charleston’s evolution while honoring its heritage. The company’s century-plus track record demonstrates how traditional businesses can successfully adapt to changing times while maintaining their core identity and values.

Through premium brands, personalized service and deep community connections, M. Dumas and Sons has established itself as an enduring Charleston institution.
