The Duke Endowment, a grant provider for child care, health care, rural churches and education in North and South Carolina, has awarded $7 million in grants to the Medical University of South Carolina.
The three grants support initiatives to improve maternal and infant health, expand access to care, and strengthen South Carolina’s health care workforce, according to a news release.
“We value our longstanding partnership with MUSC and are excited to support initiatives that directly enhance the health and well-being of South Carolinians,” Lin Hollowell, director of The Duke Endowment’s Health Care program, said in the release. “Through our collaboration, MUSC and The Duke Endowment are committed to accelerating innovation that can expand access to essential care and improve health outcomes for all.”
MUSC received $5.3 million to partner with The Duke Endowment and the University of North Carolina to improve the health of mothers and babies in the Carolinas. MUSC women’s health initiatives were also granted $1.1 million to women of reproductive age who are uninsured or enrolled in Medicaid.
The OneMUSC Workforce Development Initiative also received $1.5 million to help people start careers in health care, including nursing, medical technology and allied health with paid apprenticeships, job training and education, according to the release.
“Fostering healthy communities is core to MUSC’s mission, and The Duke Endowment shares that vision,” Carol Shannon, vice president of institutional advancement for the MUSC Foundation, said in the release. “These new grants help us bring care closer to home, invest in health workforce development and improve outcomes where the need is greatest.”
