A new report has shed light on the economic impact of GE HealhCare across South Carolina.
GE HealthCare recently announced the findings of a new economic impact report showing that its 2024 operations in South Carolina contributed $6.16 billion in economic output, representing the full value of goods and services produced directly by the company, as well as broader economic ripple effects throughout the state and country, according to a news release.
With more than 42 years of history in the state, GE HealthCare’s operations in South Carolina — anchored by its advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnet manufacturing site in Florence — generate significant economic and social value, the release stated. In 2024, the company supported nearly 800 high-quality jobs for full-time employees and contractors in the state across diverse sectors such as manufacturing, professional services, logistics and healthcare.
“Our South Carolina team is central to GE HealthCare’s ability to deliver high-quality technology to healthcare providers and patients around the world,” said Scott Olsen, executive plant manager, GE HealthCare, in the release. “From Florence to the frontlines of healthcare, our team’s expertise and dedication are a driving force behind our impact. We take great pride in building technology that not only powers innovation globally but also fuels economic opportunity locally.”
In 2024, the company’s Florence facility generated approximately $500 million in export value, underscoring South Carolina’s strategic role in the global medical technology supply chain, according to the release. As one of the state’s leading industrial exporters, GE HealthCare helps elevate South Carolina’s international trade profile while fostering career pathways for workers.
“GE HealthCare’s longstanding presence in South Carolina exemplifies the kind of high-impact investment that strengthens our state’s position in the global life sciences sector,” said James Chappell, president & CEO of SCbio, in the release. “From their commitment to advanced manufacturing to their integration with leading healthcare networks, GE HealthCare continues to be a driver of economic resilience, community development, and long-term growth across the state’s health innovation ecosystem.”
