MUSC President David Cole to retire in 2027

MUSC President David Cole to retire in 2027

After 13 years with the medical school, Dr. David Cole will retire in June 2027 from his presidency at the Medical University of South Carolina. 

Cole entered the role in 2014 as the seventh MUSC president, according to a news release. 

“MUSC is, without doubt, a jewel in South Carolina’s crown,” Cole said. “To have had the opportunity to lead and serve this remarkable institution has been one of the great privileges of my life. MUSC stands today as one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, a testament to what can be achieved when people are united in service to patients, students, families, communities and one another.  

Cole has been at MUSC since 1994 as a professor and surgical oncologist before becoming president. In the 11 years of his presidency, MUSC has been ranked as the best hospital in South Carolina by U.S. News and World Report.  

“It is impossible to overstate the impact of Dr. Cole’s leadership on MUSC. His bold vision and unwavering dedication have left an indelible mark on students, faculty, researchers and staff,” Charles Schulze, chairman of the MUSC and MUHA Board of Trustees, said in the release. 

The MUSC Board of Trustees will begin a search for Cole’s successor, which will be led by James Lemon, former chairman and sitting trustee. The search is expected to be completed by spring of 2027.  

“I am deeply thankful to the many people who supported me, but I am especially grateful to my wife, Kathy, whose steadfast support, generosity of spirit and tireless commitment to myself and the MUSC community have meant more than I can adequately express,” Cole said.
