Greenville to celebrate reopening of historic Mayberry Park
- Mayberry Park reopens Aug. 28 in Greenville‘s Unity Park
- Park honors history as a playground for Black children in 1920s
- New home for Greenville Little League and recreation leagues
- Celebration includes leaders, alumni and Greenville Drive players
The city of Greenville will join Greenville Drive owner Craig and Vicki Brown, along with other community leaders, to celebrate the grand reopening of Mayberry Park in Unity Park, on Aug. 28 at 11 a.m.
The site honors and preserves the legacy of the historic Mayberry Park. Established in the 1920s as one of the few playgrounds available to Black children in segregated Greenville, the park long stood as a symbol of resilience despite decades of neglect and inequity.
The new Mayberry Park honors that legacy while providing a modern home for Greenville Little League, recreational leagues, and children from across Greenville County.
The program will include remarks from Mayor Knox White, Lillian Brock-Flemming, Craig Brown, Sterling High alumnus John Whiteside, and Mary Duckett, followed by ceremonial first pitches from the Brown family grandchildren, Greenville Little Leagues, and Greenville Drive players.
