Roslyn Artis earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from West Virginia State University, followed by a Juris Doctor from West Virginia University College of Law and a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership and Policy from Vanderbilt University.
As president of Benedict College, Artis leads an institution with 300 employees. Her commitment to higher education excellence is evident in her definition of success: “One student at a time! My students’ successes are my successes,” she said.
Artis serves as immediate past board chair of United Way of the Midlands and holds board positions with the SC Philharmonic, Central Carolina Community Foundation, American Heart Association and Columbia Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee. She also serves on national education boards including the American Association of Colleges & Universities, Campus Compact and the NCAA Division II President’s Council.
Her leadership has earned recognition including President of the Year from Higher Ed Dive in 2020, the Governor’s Civil Rights Award in West Virginia in 2024 and induction into the HBCU Alumni Hall of Fame. Additional honors include the Columbia Chamber of Commerce’s Cathy Novinger Recognition, the Coalition of 100 Black Women’s Trailblazer Recognition and Girl Scouts Women of Distinction in 2020.
