President
Greenville Technical College

How do you feel South Carolina colleges and universities are preparing students to meet the state’s future workforce needs?

At Greenville Technical College, we work closely with economic development organizations and employers so that we anticipate needs and produce the talent to fill them as they emerge. Strong ties to the business community ensure that our programs are relevant, delivering skills that allow graduates to qualify for excellent careers earning competitive wages.

How is your institution preparing for the looming drop in traditional college-age students and the so-called “enrollment cliff?”

We’re not seeing a drop in enrollment. In fact, the opposite is true. This summer, enrollment is up 8% and next fall, we predict healthy growth. Our enrollment comes from a wider age spectrum than four-year institutions, so we are less affected by expected trends among traditional college-age students.

What can be done to counteract government funding cuts and reduced federal research grants?

Changes to some funding sources remind us of the critical importance of being careful stewards of the money we are fortunate to receive.  We also benefit greatly from the generosity of many community partners and donors, who ensure that we have the resources to provide excellent education.

How do you combat the growing skepticism about the value of higher education, particularly in light of rising costs and perceived job market relevance?

I come to the president’s office at an exciting time. The affordable education we offer is a direct path to today’s most promising job openings and provides a strong foundation for transfer, and I believe public appetite for those qualities is growing.

What is something people might be surprised to know about you?

I was a college athlete, playing football for the State University of New York at Buffalo. That experience has made me both competitive and collaborative. I enjoying winning as part of a team effort.
