The Charleston Battery Stadium at Patriots Point represents a transformative $7 million public-private partnership that redeveloped an existing College of Charleston sports complex into a modern 5,000-seat soccer venue. Located at 85 Patriots Point Road in Mount Pleasant, the 100,000-square-foot project was completed in December 2024 following a multi-phase construction timeline that began in 2019.

The project’s most distinctive innovation involved repurposed shipping containers that serve as premium seating suites and hospitality spaces, paying tribute to Charleston’s maritime heritage while reinforcing sustainability goals. LS3P Associates Ltd. architect David Burt designed the stadium with minimal land disturbance, integrating the structure into the natural topography rather than imposing upon it.

Hill Construction managed the complex construction timeline that required coordination between November and March to ensure game-ready completion. The project faced significant challenges including regulatory approvals from multiple government agencies, COVID-19 disruptions during the inaugural season and strict budget constraints that demanded creative solutions.

The modular expansion approach allowed the stadium to grow organically alongside the team’s fan base, which has tripled since 2019. Enhanced facilities include upgraded locker rooms, a full-length LED field board along the west sideline, and improved hospitality zones that prioritize fan experience over sheer capacity.

Project owner HCFC, LLC worked closely with engineering firms Seamon Whiteside, DWG Inc. and Atlantic Engineering to create a venue that serves both the Charleston Battery and College of Charleston athletics programs, establishing a premier sports facility in the Lowcountry.
