Glenn M. Walters returned to The Citadel as its 20th president in 2018 after 39 years as a Marine Corps officer. Walters graduated from The Citadel in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He completed flight training in Pensacola, Florida, becoming a naval aviator in 1981.

Walters served as a test pilot, testing systems for the AH-1W Super Cobra Attack Helicopter, and commanded VMX-22, the initial squadron to field the MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. He deployed to the Pacific and Central Command theaters and commanded the Second Marine Aircraft Wing in Afghanistan.

Before returning to The Citadel, Walters served as the 34th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, overseeing approximately 184,000 active duty and 38,000 reserve Marines. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal and Legion of Merit.

As president, Walters focuses on leadership development and academic excellence while overseeing significant capital improvements.
