An Upstate-headquartered bank has appointed a Lowcountry-based leader into an executive role.
The Southern Bank has named Ryan Benton as executive vice president, which comes on the heels of M.J. “J.” Huggins III’s recent selection as CEO.

Benton will oversee and manage major operational areas with a focus on driving strategic growth in future locations along the South Carolina coast, according to a news release.
“Ryan embodies the spirit of community banking, making him a valuable addition to our leadership team,” said Scott Frierson, president and chief banking officer of The Southern Bank. “He shares our belief in giving back to our communities, and we’re confident his growth mindset and expertise will make a lasting impact here at the bank.”
Benton brings 20 years of expertise in commercial, business and retail banking. As the former market president for United Bank’s Charleston Region, he led the commercial and business banking division; directed marketing, community outreach and budget initiatives while overseeing an eight-branch retail network, and drove new business development through customized financial solutions, the release stated.

“It’s an honor to join the team at The Southern Bank. Jamin, J. and Scott have a compelling vision for community-focused growth, and I’m excited for the opportunity to be a part of it,” said Benton in the release.
In addition to his professional background, Benton is passionate about local economic growth and small business success. He volunteers in the local community, contributing to various charitable and business development initiatives in Charleston.
Benton is a graduate of The Citadel and the LSU Graduate School of Banking and is based in Charleston.
