Work begins on Greenville County nonprofit’s new campus

A Greenville County nonprofit recently celebrated the groundbreaking of its new facility that will expand its service and impact.

Meals on Wheels of Greenville County’s new facility at 3905 August Road is  a 3.5-acre campus designed to support the growing needs of the community and set to improve Meals on Wheels’ operations and service delivery, according to a news release.

“While we are expanding our service, we want to reassure the community that our core mission is always our top priority and at the forefront of what we provide every day,” said Catriona Carlisle, executive director of Meals on Wheels of Greenville County, in the release. “As we continue to grow with Greenville and start this new chapter as an organization, we are deepening our commitment as a leader, partner and service provider in the fight to end food insecurity across Greenville County.”

Meals on Wheels of Greenville began construction on its new facility in January, which will accommodate a vehicle fleet, improved food storage and increased meal preparation capabilities, the release stated. The new campus will feature a circular drive for efficient volunteer meal pick-ups, a dedicated loading dock for large food deliveries and even an outdoor amphitheater.

The general contractor on the project is Harper General Contractors and the architect is MacMillian Pazdan Smith.

It will also house a nearly 15,000-square-foot kitchen, which will triple the organization’s meal production capacity, enabling it to prepare up to 6,000 meals a day, according to the release. Additionally, with 5,000 square feet dedicated to food storage, the expanded space will double the current storage capacity, streamlining both meal prep and storage processes.

Located near Interstate 85, Augusta Road and Pleasantburg Drive, the new facility provides easy access to major roads, ensuring smooth and timely meal deliveries across the county, the release stated.

In 2024, Meals on Wheels Greenville:

• Delivered 394,988 total meals
• Served 2,569 clients
• Gained 1,063 new clients, ages 20-102
• Had more than 1,400 active volunteers
• Distributed 1,672 emergency meal kits

“This is an exciting year for us as we build on the momentum we gained in 2024. This new facility will allow us to strengthen our ability to serve the growing needs of our community,” said Jimmy Buddenberg, chairman of the board, Meals on Wheels of Greenville County, in the release. “As we grow with Greenville and start this new chapter, we are deepening our commitment as a leader, partner, and service provider in the fight to end food insecurity across Greenville County.
