A credit union is gearing up to enter the Lowcountry market with the naming of a key executive.

Self-Help Credit Union has named Rebecca Walker as its new Charleston area regional manager. Walker has worked in the financial industry in the Charleston area since 2008. She has held roles in local banks, a credit union, and an investment company, according to a news release.

Walker, a Berkeley County resident, is the past president and current board member of the Moncks Corner Rotary, assistant governor for Rotary District 7770, board member for the Berkeley County Museum, former board member and president of Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County, and former board member and treasurer of the Center for Women, according to the release.

Walker will lead Self-Help Credit Union’s expansion into the Charleston market, beginning with the opening of its first branch at 749 N Main St., Summerville, in mid to late summer.

“I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to serve the community with an organization that is focused on helping people to build wealth,” Walker said in the release. “I look forward to working with nonprofits, faith leaders, and educators to bring affordable financial services to the Lowcountry.”

Self-Help Credit Union has branches in Greenville and Columbia that currently serve 7,000 members, according to the release. In 2024, it provided $78 million in loans for affordable housing and a public charter school and saved consumers caught up in predatory loans more than $1 million in interest and fees.
