MUSC Health expands Columbia emergency department

- MUSC Health celebrated the Phase 2 completion of its $30 million emergency department expansion in Columbia.
- The project doubles the emergency department’s capacity to serve more patients.
- Renovations include modern treatment spaces, advanced technology and improved patient flow.
- The full emergency department renovation is expected to be completed in December.
MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Downtown celebrated the grand opening and ribbon cutting of its newly expanded emergency department, marking the Phase 2 completion of a $30 million renovation project that doubles the department’s capacity.
MUSC Health said the project significantly enhances emergency care services for patients across the Midlands. The full renovation will be complete in December, according to a news release.
Hospital leaders, care team members, community leaders, elected officials and community partners gathered to commemorate the milestone and tour the newly renovated facility.
“This expansion is a significant investment in the health of our community and our future,” Matt Littlejohn, CEO of MUSC Health-Midlands Division, said in the release. “The Midlands continues to grow, and with that growth comes an increased need for accessible, high-quality emergency care. This beautiful new space allows us to serve more patients, support our care team members and deliver the exceptional care our community deserves.”
The expanded Emergency Department features modern treatment spaces, advanced technology and enhanced patient-centered design elements that improve patient flow, support care team efficiency and increase access to high-quality emergency care. By doubling the department’s capacity, MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Downtown is better positioned to meet increasing demand while reducing wait times and enhancing the overall patient experience, the release said.
