Roper St. Francis completed a three-year expansion of its Berkeley Hospital, doubling its bed capacity to 100.
The hospital, located at 100 Callen Blvd., opened in 2019 for the Goose Creek, Summerville and surrounding communities. Now it has 300,000 square feet of addition and renovated space, a part of the facility’s 2030 Strategic Plan
“Berkeley Hospital has been providing exceptional care to this community since day one,” Joseph DeLeon, Roper St. Francis Healthcare president and CEO, said in a news release. “This expansion reflects our commitment to grow alongside our neighbors and ensure families have access to advanced health care close to home. The investments made here today will benefit patients for generations to come.”
The expansion includes a new four-story bed tower, expanded emergency services from 14 to 35 patient care bays, doubled imaging service units, expanded women, infants and children’s services, doubled surgical capacity, added a new heart and vascular center, and expanded other lobby areas.
Throughout the expansion construction, the hospital maintained a hospital safety grade of “A” from The Leapfrog Group, according to the release.
“Reaching this milestone would not have been possible without the support, patience and dedication of so many people,” Jennifer Crawford, chief nursing officer of Berkeley Hospital, said in the release. “Our teammates have continued to deliver exceptional care while adapting to changing spaces and workflows. Their commitment to our patients never wavered, and this expansion is a testament to what can be accomplished when an entire community comes together.”
In total, the construction used about 2,000 tons of steel and 8,500 cubic yards of concrete, employing 3,100 workers for 600,000 hours. The project was completed by Rodgers Builders in phases to allow operations to stay open, according to the release.
“We are proud to partner with Roper St. Francis Healthcare to bring this important expansion to life,” Jonathan Byers, vice president for construction operations at Rodgers Builders, said in the release. “Our team delivered a complex, multi-phase project while maintaining a safe, fully operational hospital environment. This milestone reflects the dedication of our project teams and trade partners, and our shared commitment to building spaces that enhance patient care and support the growing Lowcountry community.”
