About: KRJ Consulting provides tailored solutions that empower your people, streamline your processes, and drive growth.

Top female executive: Karen Jenkins, President and CEO

What does it mean to you to be a woman-owned business?

As the owner of KRJ Consulting, being a woman-owned business means a great deal to me on both personal and professional levels. It embodies resilience, strength, and the pursuit of excellence in a landscape where women continue to break barriers and redefine leadership.

On a personal level, it signifies the realization of a vision that I have nurtured with dedication and hard work. It’s a testament to the possibilities that arise when passion meets perseverance. Being a woman-owned business reflects my commitment to setting an example for other women, showing that success is attainable regardless of the challenges one might face.

Professionally, it underscores our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in every aspect of our work. It means we prioritize creating an environment where different perspectives are celebrated and where innovation thrives through collaboration. Our status as a woman-owned business allows us to bring unique insights and approaches to our clients, driving impactful results and meaningful change.

For me, it is about contributing to the larger narrative of economic empowerment for women. By supporting other women entrepreneurs, advocating for equitable business practices, and engaging in community initiatives, KRJ Consulting aims to make a lasting positive impact.

Ultimately, being a woman-owned business is about leading with integrity, inspiring future generations, and continually striving to succeed.

What challenges have you faced as a women-owned business?

As the owner of KRJ Consulting, I’ve encountered a variety of challenges unique to being a woman-owned business. One of the primary hurdles has been overcoming preconceived notions and biases within the industry. Despite progress in gender equality, women business owners often still face skepticism regarding their capabilities and expertise. Proving our worth and demonstrating our competence has required not only exceptional performance but also a continuous effort to educate and shift perceptions.

Networking and building strategic alliances have also presented challenges. The traditional business networks have historically been male dominated, making it difficult at times to establish the connections necessary for growth and expansion. Overcoming this involved seeking out and creating supportive networks of like-minded professionals and allies who understand and champion the value of diversity in business.

Balancing the demands of running a business with personal and family responsibilities is another challenge that many women entrepreneurs face. Juggling these responsibilities has required careful time management, delegation, and sometimes making tough choices to ensure both the business and personal life receive the attention they deserve.

Despite these challenges, they have also driven me to become more innovative, persistent, and determined. Each obstacle has provided valuable lessons and has shaped KRJ Consulting into a resilient and adaptive organization. The journey, though challenging, has been immensely rewarding, and it reinforces my commitment to advocating for and empowering other women entrepreneurs.

How do you support women in your business and community?

I actively donate my time to Killingsworth Home for Women, providing financial advice and tips for success.  I also host a no cost group mentoring /coaching program: Eat, Learn, Grow.

What recent accomplishments are you most proud of?

Having been named the first Black chair of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. I am completing my tenure next month.  I recently completed a TEDX presentation.
