About: TealHaus is a content-forward agency based in Greenville, specializing in storytelling and strategy.
Top female executive: Lindsay Niedringhaus, founder and owner
What does it mean to you to be a women-owned business?
It means that we’re a company that gets the job done — on time, on budget, and on point.
People often ask how we grew so quickly, serving over 100 clients in three years. My answer? Our team is comprised of women who get it. We’re all seasoned in our careers, so this isn’t our first rodeo; we trust our instincts and brains. We also all value our life outside of work, so we spend the time during work actually doing the work — not hemming and hawing, chatting by the water cooler, or doing and redoing.
Throughout my career, I served as the head of marketing and hired agencies to assist me. I was amazed at the amount of billable time I would pay for these agencies to redo their own work. I’ve also worked within agencies, and I saw how we would clock time and bill clients for endless discussions. I wanted to lead a company that was efficient.
I’m not saying that as a group we don’t strategize or discuss; we certainly do. But we’re also respectful of clients’ budgets and their own time as well. And we know when our idea is a good one worth executing.
What challenges have you faced as a women-owned business?
Registering to be an official Woman Owned Small Business with the government is a big one! The process is very detailed and time-consuming, and many times the website has technical difficulties. Mollie on our team has spearheaded this project, and thank goodness she is patient!
Broadly speaking, because we are an all-woman team, we fight against the stereotype of being a bunch of “cute girls” just having fun “doing marketing stuff.” Sure, we love fashion and pop culture and cocktails, but we also love running marathons, driving four-wheelers, doing standup comedy, and going fishing. And our work? It’s true, meaningful, deep work. We’re writing strategic plans for nonprofits, repositioning 30-year-old companies in the industry, and helping startups realize their value propositions and voices.
It’s funny … though we’re a group of women, we have a host of clients in the AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) sector. Many would assume they’d hire agencies full of men. But these clients recognize that we understand storytelling and content — area in which most of this industry struggles — so it’s an easy partnership. And we never mind putting on a hard hat!
How do you support women in your business and community?
We just recently announced a sister company we have created called HerHaus, which will function as a space for empowered women to come together, learn from each other, and support each other.
When I began TealHaus, I struggled personally. Starting and running the company took so much of my time that I found myself declining dinners with friends or weekends away. One of my friends even said to me, “Why are you so stressed all the time?” I felt so isolated.
The more I spoke with not just female business owners, but women in the workforce in general, I realized we all felt alone. We were balancing families and jobs, checking email on our phones while at the grocery store and answering calls from the school while writing a marketing strategy. We were all trying to do it all, and we were all absolutely exhausted.
After finding myself googling things like “how to lower cortisol levels” and “scheduling my work schedule based on my zodiac sign” (not kidding), I realized we — all women — needed a better solution. I had seen women entrepreneur happy hour get-togethers pop up every now and then, but they all died off because nobody had time to host them or initiate the next … not to mention that walking blindly into a space where you know no one and just have to strike up a conversation is intimidating. So we, the women of TealHaus, decided to create the space we wished already existed. Enter HerHaus.
HerHaus is a membership-based program that approaches the health of women in a holistic way: spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and physically. Membership includes access to monthly speakers, in-person and virtual, who are experts in their fields and who can share with us their knowledge on everything from yoga to nutrition, anxiety to financial planning, and everything in between. In addition, membership includes access to a list of perks from women-owned businesses around town.
We’re hosting a launch party in November to share the speakers, and the program will officially start January 1, 2025.
What recent accomplishments are you most proud of?
We’re currently working with the Heller family on a project at Heritage Green. With the help of some Greenville friends, Max and Trude Heller escaped the Holocaust and moved to Greenville. Upon settling in Greenville and running a successful business, Max made huge transformations for our city, including revitalizing our downtown, desegregating City Hall, and working to improve the quality of low-income housing. Trude spent her time as a Holocaust educator, speaking to youth and adults in schools, churches, and civic centers. TealHaus has the honor of working with Max and Trude’s daughters, Francie Heller and Susan Moses, as well as a host of city and county leaders, on a project that will honor their legacy as well as create an inviting space on Heritage Green that celebrates the arts, community, culture, and education.
To sit in a room with the Hellers and hear the stories from their parents is truly humbling. The advisory council for the project is also full of people who continually have their hands in improving our city and financially supporting several nonprofits in the Upstate. Honestly, I truly don’t feel deserving to sit in a room with all of them, and I am eternally grateful for the hometown they’ve created and sustained for us. Being able to spearhead a project that honors such wonderful people, encourages inclusion and community, and improves the landscape of our downtown is truly meaningful.
