Charles Scales owns the 58-year-old company, which now employs 45 people, including three of his sons. The average tenure for a GOS employee is 18 years.
Scales called the 2008 Great Recession and “competing with the big box stores” the company’s biggest challenges, but GOS has succeeded through “better service at a fair price.”
Scales hopes his sons will continue on with the foundation he has built, “and just to continue to provide a level of service that has left this country.”
He expects the business will need to continue to adapt. “AI will be a huge factor in our business very shortly,” he said.
GOS supports various chambers, Upstate SC Alliance, and The Kim S. Miller Family Enterprise Institute of South Carolina at Anderson University.
